The Regions along the way
The Great Southern Touring Route can be divided roughly into three separate regions,
each offering diverse experiences but as a whole, offering the very best of what Australia
offers. Various connections in themselves can offer excellent holiday opportunities.
Melbourne at its best
Melbourne prides itself on being a great
city. It’s hardly surprising, with its
spectacular combination of old and new
architecture, elegant streetscapes, ethnic
communities and lavish parks and
gardens. Add Australia’s best eating, an
excellent transit system - a ride on the
free tram around town is a must - and a
packed calendar boasting sporting
spectacular and exuberant events, and
you have all the ingredients for one of
the most liveable cities in the world.
Sporting and cultural capital
Some of the major sporting events include
the Australian Football League grand final,
cricket’s fabled Boxing Day Test match, the
Melbourne Cup the Australian Formula One
Grand Prix and the Australian Tennis Open.
Melbourne is also Australia’s cultural capital
with its own Symphony Orchestra and a
wide range of theatres, art galleries and
museums. Just down the road is Werribee
with many historic and natural attractions.
