The Regions along the way
The Great Southern Touring Route can be divided roughly into three separate regions,
each offering diverse experiences but as a whole, offering the very best of what Australia
offers. Various connections in themselves can offer excellent holiday opportunities.
Sydney coastal route
The best way to take in the beauty of the
coastline between Melbourne and Sydney
is to drive. Visit national parks, wildlife,
beautiful surf beaches and pristine lakes,
and enjoy fine food and wine along the
way. The route takes in the popular
resort towns of Merimbula, Batemans
Bay and Lakes Entrance as well as
smaller, quieter communities. The
connection to the Touring Route is via the
Mornington Peninsula and the car ferry to
Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula.
Sydney Capital country route
This route charts a course from Sydney to
Melbourne via the nation’s capital, Canberra.
Starting in Sydney famous for its icons such
as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney
Opera House, and Bondi Beach. Then on to
Canberra, the nation’s capital. From
Canberra the touring route passes through
some of the most attractive towns in Victoria,
and award winning wineries. Continue to the
Murray River, home to the world’s largest
fleet of paddle steamers to the Goldfields
region before heading into Melbourne.
