The Regions along the way
The Great Southern Touring Route can be divided roughly into three separate regions,
each offering diverse experiences but as a whole, offering the very best of what Australia
offers. Various connections in themselves can offer excellent holiday opportunities.
Welcome to the 12 Apostles
As the Great Ocean Road returns to the
coast at Princetown, the majesty of the
Port Campbell National Park quickly begins
to unfold. Huge natural features loom large.
Blowholes roar with spouting water and the
sea boils around the towering rock stacks.
The Twelve Apostles are a must. Board-
walks, platforms and an interpretive centre
make it easy to see and understand this
truly awe-inspiring scenery. The scores of
ships that have been wrecked give this
section its name, the Shipwreck Coast..
Warrnambool’s maritime heritage
The picturesque city of Warrnambool
overlooks the deep blue of the Southern
Ocean and has a long, fascinating maritime
history. These times are recaptured at the
city’s major attraction, “Flagstaff Hill”, a
maritime village and port representative of
19th century Warrnambool with a spectacular
sound and laser light show ‘Shipwrecked’.
The city is also famous for the whales that
visit annually. Nearby is the historic village
of Port Fairy, by the Moyne River.
